Brest center of Seoul St. Mary Hospital, Catholic University of Korea

With increasing breast related diseases from the change of times and environment, the breast center of Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, Catholic University of Korea was opened as the first center to specialize breast diseases in 1988.
Breast cancer is rapidly spreading, forming the highest percentage of Korean women’s cancers. It is resulted from earlier menarche and delayed marriage/delivery, which make women be exposed to the female hormone for a longer time and westernized life style.
The breast center was established for the specialist to manage all breast related diseases as well as the breast cancer. Breast center has walked into steady growth with patients’ full support. With more than 20,000 patients visited to this center in 2006, it has performed about 1000 operations for the breast related diseases.

One-day examination and treatment, one-stop system established

For the patients’ convenience, the breast center has been administering one-stop system by carrying out breast photography, ultrasonography, and even biopsy in case the problem was found at their visit, which has been getting a good response from patients. Besides, all things including seeing a doctor, counsel, management after operation, nutrition consultation, etc. are finished within the center.
Moreover, the patients’ meeting, ‘kayuhwe’ was created to help the rehabilitation and recovery of patients with the breast cancer in 1988 when the center was opened. There are 400 members in ‘kayuhwe’ who are doing activities for the prevention of the breast cancer and encouragement of the rehabilitation after operation.
The breast center is trying to show a new advance with the opening of Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital. It has recently established one-stop system for the patient’s high satisfaction. For this purpose, it made the rooms for breast photography and ultrasonography, and shortened the waiting period between the first examination and operation to 1~2 weeks for patients’ quick recovery.

Particularly, it rearranged the doctor’s check-up rounds, treatment, meeting, and others to efficiently to set the scheduled time, thus minimized the waiting time by the full appointment system. Expanding the specialists from 15 to 21, the breast center is making an effort to make all things above possible for patients’ highest satisfaction.
